The band was composed by guitarist Tom Lee and drummer Nick Babey in Christmas 2009. The original reason for forming the group was to create a Christmas album. This still hasn't happened. After attending Todd Brewer's School of Music with guitarist Alun Gunderson in early 2012, they met guitarist Lazar Todorovic who quickly gelled with the group. Due to musical differences, Gunderson parted ways with the band in the summer of 2013.
Collect Call placed third in the 2012 WRASA Kids Help Phone "Lighthouse" Talent Show in December. In January 2013, the band reached the Top 10 in the Youthink BC's Best Teen Band Contest.
