Chad Randall Matheny, known professionally as Emperor X, is an American singer-songwriter who has been based in Berlin since 2012. He garnered attention for burying limited translucent cassette copies of his 2011 album Western Teleport (a geocaching stunt featured by NPR) and was commissioned in 2014 by 99% Invisible to write a "10,000-Year Earworm" song. In 2020 he co-founded the artist-managed label cooperative Dreams of Field Recordings with Christian Holden.
