John Cameron Mitchell is the creator, writer and original star of the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch (stage debut 1998) and wrote, directed and starred in its 2001 film adaptation. He won Best Director at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival for Hedwig and received a Golden Globe nomination; he later directed Shortbus (2006) and Rabbit Hole (2010). Mitchell has continued to work in theatre, film and audio (including the podcast musical Anthem: Homunculus) and received a Special Tony Award for his 2015 return to Hedwig on Broadway.
