Daughters of Darkness

Of the several amazing things that have ever come out of Europe, right at the top of the list is the Lesbian Vampire movie. And there is no more superlative example of that ecstatic, erotic, licentiously macabre territory than Belgian weirdo Harry Kumel's hyper-stylized psychological high Gothic heart-piercer DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS. The world's worst newlywed couple arrive at an enormous, abandoned hotel in the middle of winter but are soon joined by a mysterious Countess (played the impossibly elegant Delphine Seyrig) and her beautiful young secretary, who seem to have designs on the tortured young bride. Strange gets stranger as desire and terror intertwine and the couple descend into a world of sadism, obsession, sex, death, and of course — lesbian vampires! Saturated with powerful primary colors and surreal and sultry dialogue, DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS also features possibly THE greatest horror film score of all time. Eroticized power, decaying grandeur, abstract and ceremonious evil...(Tommy Swenson).
