“Soundprints of the East” will explore the harmonic and rhythmic interstices of Dastgah (the classical Persian modal system and repertoire) and contemporary Western art music. “Soundprints” proposes a compositional path rooted in formal inquiry, recontextualizing Eastern modal systems inside contemporary rhythmic and sonic architecture. Rather than referencing Persian music as color or influence, I treat it as a structural and emotional foundation.
"Soundprints of the East" by Mehrnam Rastegari is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
Thanks to the Center for Traditional Music and Dance for making this project happen.
