David Gibson Quartet

David Gibson is currently active on the New York music scene as a trombonist, composer, arranger, educator, musical director, and bandleader. His passion for music began as a teen in Oklahoma and continues to galvanize his life as part of the supportive community of jazz artists based in and around New York City that he calls his “musical family”. Legendary trombonist/composer Slide Hampton said, “David Gibson is one of the very talented, truly dedicated musicians on the New York scene today.” Gibson’s early experience in New York saw him performing alongside Mr. Hampton, as well as Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, and others. In 2003, he was a finalist in the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Trombone Competition and has subsequently released seven recordings as a bandleader. His varied groups, ranging in size from a quartet to nonet, perform regularly at several NYC venues including Smalls, Dizzy’s, SMOKE, Fat Cat, and the Django while featuring his sizable library of unique compositions and arrangements. Gibson’s arrangements and compositions have been featured by the bands of Roy Hargrove, Josh Evans, George Gee, Danny Aiello, John Dokes, and others. His work as a composer/arranger can also be heard on several recordings of Orrin Evans’ GRAMMY-nominated Captain Black Big Band, of which he’s a member. The renowned group’s 2020 release, “The Intangible Between”, on SMOKE Sessions marks their second GRAMMY nomination in the Large Jazz Ensemble category. In addition to his composing/performing duties, David continues to enjoy his role as a mentor/educator for the many passionate students he encounters through his teaching at Columbia University, New School University, and Jazz House Kids. He believes strongly that music is a powerful method of communication that can provide vital nourishment for everyone. David plays Edwards Trombones Weblinks: www.jazzbone.org/ Cameron Campbell (a.k.a. "mellotones") is a 20 year old pianist, composer and producer from Worcester MA. His primary focus is Black American Music and music of the African Diaspora, as well as avant-garde and electronic music. Although Cameron began playing the piano at the age of 2, his musical career truly began around age 9, as he and his siblings performed American songbook standards at nursing homes around Central MA. Throughout middle and high school Cameron performed with the Assumption University Jazz Ensemble and attended many summer jazz camps where he got the opportunity to learn from and work with legendary musicians such as Jimmy Cobb, Sheila Jordan, Christian Sands, Javon Jackson, David Williams, and Luis Perdomo. In 2016, Cameron began studying with well known Central MA pianist Dick Odgren (Emil Haddad, Mike Metheny, Ictus) until the summer of 2018, when he began studying with esteemed pianist Christian Sands to further develop his craft and sound. Cameron has performed with the Assumption University Jazz Ensemble, Arlington Youth Jazz Ensemble, Isosceles Groove, MA Central Districts Big Band, MA All State Big Band and the All National Big Band. Cameron had the honor of performing in the 2019 Vermont Jazz Center 3rd Annual Solo Piano Festival, headlined by names like George Cables, Joanne Brackeen, Kenny Werner and Julius Rodrigues. He is currently leading his own trio and quartet as well as doing solo and sideman work in the Central MA/Boston, NYC, Connecticut, and Vermont jazz scenes. In addition, he was a recipient of the 2020 Dennis Wrenn Music Scholarship. In January 2021, Cameron had the chance to teach music to elementary and middle school children at Gateways Academy in Shrewsbury MA, an experience which he profoundly enjoyed, and sees himself doing in the future. As of autumn 2022 Cameron is continuing his musical education at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. There he is mentored by legendary pianist Marc Cary as well as working with Damien Sneed and the MSM Gospel Ensemble. He continues to develop as a player and writer, composing a book of nearly 50 original pieces, and producing electronic music under the name "mellotones." Cameron is discovering his personal sound as a musician while also cutting his teeth at some of the hottest jam sessions in the city. He cites as inspirations jazz piano greats including; Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Keith Jarrett. But is very heavily influenced by pianists of the 21st Century such as; Vijay Iyer, Gerald Clayton, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran, and Robert Glasper. His influences easily span outside of jazz too. At any given moment Cameron could be listening to The Beatles, MF DOOM, Frank Zappa, or Kim Burrell. Ruby Farmer is a bassist from Brooklyn, NY. She has shared the stage with acclaimed artists including Sean Jones, Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Houston Person, Emmanuel Michael, and Kandace Springs, and has performed at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Close Up NYC, Dizzy's Jazz Club, Birdland Jazz Club, and Steinway Hall. She is currently a student at Columbia University studying cognitive science and music. In demand drummer, Jason Brown, has been a driving force behind major artists since the early days of his career. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio; Brown learned his trade under the tutelage of Billy Hart.For seven years he toured and recorded with Grammy nominated vocalist & composer, Carmen Lundy; with Pat Martino he appeared at major festivals worldwide, such as Jarasum International Jazz Festival and Rochester Jazz Festival. He has also worked with renowned artists such as Lizz Wright, Cedar Walton, Nicholas Payton, Wayne Escoffery and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Now a key member of Amina Figarova’s Sextet, Jason Brown has performed at the Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg and major venues throughout Europe and the USA. As a leader, Brown has been a featured artist with the Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra of St Petersburg on several occasions and taken his quintet, featuring saxophonist Steve Grossman, to the White Knight’s Festival in Russia. He has also led his own bands at Smalls Jazz Club and various other venues in New York and throughout the USA, Russia and Ukraine.
