Caleb Tobocman Quartet

Caleb Tobocman is one of New York’s most in-demand rising bass stars. Having grown up in a musical family (in the artist building Manhattan Plaza), Caleb picked up the upright bass at the age of 17 and it was apparent he was a natural. In a few short years, he has already shared the bandstand with many jazz greats. Caleb studied at Manhattan School of Music under legends Ron Carter and Buster Williams. Born September 3rd, 1967 in New York City, guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 60 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has made five recordings for the Criss Cross Jazz label. The latest, Heart's Content, features the all-star rhythm section of Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Bill Stewart.While a student at The New School, Peter met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, who asked him to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was released as a CD by Music Masters. Hall once noted that Peter &has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive young guitarists I've heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.That same year, Peter was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. Some people just have it. Donaldson said. &most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all.Peter has also played with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb's Mob), organist Larry Goldings, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Rhyne, drummer Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and Eric Alexander and performed in North America, Europe and Asia and making numerous television appearances.Peter has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam.Peter has been fortunate to gain the respect of his peers and mentors. My musical journey began after my family received a piano from a local church. I started to pick out little melodies and chords at the age of 5 or 6. As I got a bit older, I began to learn my favorite classic rock and soul tunes from the 70’s (Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago, etc) by ear. It was then that my parents decided it was time to start getting me classical lessons. My teacher would get frustrated with my inexorable knack for changing notes and rhythms to the way I wanted to play them. This continued for some time until the age of about 10 or 11. During this period of my life, I discovered something that would change my life forever. I came across Autumn Leaves from Bill Evans’ iconic Portrait In Jazz recording. After hearing the first few notes, I was mesmerized. After playing the first snippet of Autumn Leaves in my lesson that next week, my teacher decided it was time to get a real jazz teacher. Suddenly I was gigging in town with local professionals, and fully entrenched in learning the language and basics of the music. During my 8th grade year, my parents, who recognized my passion, decided to do something radical. They were willing to fly my sister and I to Houston to audition for one of the most prestigious art schools in the nation, HSPVA. I was instantly drawn to the school from its who’s-who list of jazz alumni (Robert Glasper, Jason Moran, Walter Smith). My sister and I found out we made it into the school a few months after the audition, and we planned to move to Houston in the summer of 2015. In high school, I had the pleasure of playing with Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Inrgrid Jensen, Don Braden, and was encouraged by masters such as Barry Harris, Javon Jackson, and Robert Glasper through my participation in incredible programs such as YoungArts Week and the Thelonious Monk Institute All Star Tour. In 2019, after high school, I applied to and was accepted at the Juilliard School in New York City, and I am currently finishing my undergraduate degree at this wonderful institution.
