About
The First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn has been meeting regularly in Brooklyn Heights, NY since 1833 and worshipping in our historic neo-gothic sanctuary since 1844.
We are located at Pierrepont Street and Monroe Place in Brooklyn Heights, NY, in a shady, quiet residential neighborhood just over the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan. The main public entrance to the Sanctuary is on Pierrepont Street. The church office (and official mailing address) is 50 Monroe Place, Brooklyn, NY 11201 , just around the corner from the public entrance. We are easily reached by subway, F train to Jay Street, A to High Street, 4,5 and R to Borough Hall and 2,3 to Clark Street.
We are a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which has a liberal spiritual philosophy which keeps an open mind to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places.
We welcome families of all kinds with children of all ages. We have a vibrant Religious Educationprogram, an active coming of age program for teens and young adults and childcare for the youngest members of our community.
We have a fantastic music program that makes wonderful use of our historic pipe organ as part of our worship service and we feature many special music services throughout the year to celebrate jazz, folk, classical and traditional music.
We welcome bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people to our congregation, to participate fully as a part of our community, our celebrations, and our work for social justice. We also participate in workshops developed by the UUA to reduce prejudice by increasing understanding and acceptance among people of different sexual orientations.
If you are are visiting us for the first time please visit our newcomers’ page. We want you to be an honored guest. Please join us for a cup of fair trade coffee or tea and visit our welcome table after the worship service.
