Nuyorican Poets Cafe is an iconic nonprofit performance space in Alphabet City known for spoken-word poetry slams, Latin jazz, hip-hop, theater, and community programming. Founded in 1973 by Miguel Algarín and fellow poets, it later settled at 236 E. 3rd Street and hosted New York City’s first poetry slam in 1989; the historic building is currently closed for a three-year renovation through 2026 with programming held off-site around the Lower East Side.
